The placenta is an amazing organ that is often an afterthought of a woman's birthing time. But a babies placenta has nourished and protected them for 9 months, and can keep nourishing and protecting the family far beyond birth, if treated with the proper respect.
The known ingredients that give the placenta its healing properties are:
- Gonadatropins: the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone
- Prolactin: promotes lactation
- Oxytocin: to decrease pain and increase bonding in mother and infant
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: boosts energy and helps recovery from stressful events
- Cortisone: combats stress and unlocks energy stores
- Interferon: stimulates the immune system to protect against infections
- Prostaglandins: anti-inflammatory
- Iron: replenishes iron deficiency and anemia, a common postpartum condition
- Urokinase inhibiting factor and factor XIII: stops bleeding and enhances wound healing
- Gammaglobulin: immune booster that helps protect against postpartum infections
To read more on the benefits of placenta consumption, read here. I offer many placenta services, including:
Placenta Encapsulation
- encapsulation is an easy and flavorless way to consume your placenta.
The benefits of placental consumption include: decreased lochia flow,
reduced risk of PPD and baby blues, reduced risk of postpartum
hemorrhage, decreased risk of iron deficiency, increased milk supply,
enriched milk supply, increased energy.
I offer PE in either the TCM method or the raw foods method. I can also add a number of herbs to the capsules at no additional charge. PE includes pick up from your place of birth, encapsulation, and
delivery within 72 hours of pick up - $200
Placenta Tincture - Placenta tincture is an alcohol-based tincture that lasts well beyond the viability of PE
pills. The added bonus is that it can be made right along with the capsules as it only takes a small piece of your babies placenta to create. The
tincture can be used in any time of trauma, emotional
distress, PMS, depression, or during menopause. The tincture can also be diluted in a bit of
water and given to the child when he or she is getting sick or in a time
of transition. It can even be turned
into a homeopathic remedy! The tincture is very shelf-stable if kept in a cool
dark place such as a cupboard, and will last for many, many years. Tincture includes pick up from your place of birth, preparation, and
delivery within 72 hours of pick up - $200 if ordered w/o other placenta services, only $75 if in combination with other services
Placenta Salve - Placenta has been known and used for skin and hair care for quite
some time. Pharmaceutical companies to make skin care products, anti-aging products, and hair care products from placenta, and several expensive anti-aging
lotions and creams contain "sheep placenta extract" as their secret
ingredient. I offer a natural and healing salve using some of your
own placenta, custom made for your own use. Placenta salve can be used as cesarean scar cream, perineal comfort cream, diaper rash ointment, cradle cap or baby eczema ointment, a general facial moisturizer, stretch mark minimizing, and any other form of general healing and skin-care salve. Like the tincture, placenta salve can be completed right along with PE or Tincture (or both) as it only uses a small portion of placenta. Salve preparation includes pick up from your place of birth, preparation, and
delivery within 72 hours of pick up - $200 if ordered w/o other placenta services, only $75 if in combination with other services
Placenta Prints - a placenta print is a beautiful way to commemorate
your babies birth. It can be done with paint or with the placentas own
blood. Every placenta print is finished on an 11.5x8 (or larger) canvas.
Placenta Prints include pick up from your place of birth, completion, and delivery within 1 week of pick up - $150
Directions for Preparing Your Placenta:
As soon as possible after the placenta has been birthed, it needs to be
placed in a food-grade container (glass or ceramic is best, but double
bagged Ziploc will also work), sealed tightly and placed in a portable cooler on ice (preferably without touching the ice directly). If the
family wants to delay cord cutting, this can be done up to three to four
hours later, and then the cord must be severed, and the placenta
quickly refrigerated in order to safely ingest the placenta later.
Please note that you will be unable to have a lotus birth (leaving the
cord attached until it detaches on its own) if you want to safely
encapsulate your placenta.
A fresh placenta should be ‘processed’ within 24-48 hours for maximum
benefits (this includes encapsulation, consumption, or burial). It can
be done up to 7 days later, but will not be as potent. If it is not
possible to process the placenta within 48 hours, it should be double
bagged in Ziploc freezer bags and frozen. If encapsulating from the
frozen state, the placenta should be completely thawed, which takes
about 24 hours.
If you are planning a hospital birth, be sure to tell your care provider
ahead of time that you are planning on taking your placenta home. Additionally, be sure to contact your hospital L&D floor and/or Risk Management to iron out the details. Ideally, you should approach the hospital 8 weeks before you are due in the event any paperwork needs to be processed. You
should plan on bringing a cooler and zip locs with you to the hospital for care and
ease of transport from hospital to home. Read more about how to best
handle the release of your placenta from the hospital here, and download a hospital liability release form here. For more information on having your placenta released from a Houston-area hospital, please contact me.
